Charles L Mauro CHFP is the President and Founder of MAURO Usability Science (MUS) (1975-present), a leading provider of neuroscience-based design research focused on UX optimization and usability for complex products and services. Selected by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society as a “Titan of Industry” for HF research. Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (BCPE 1312) with 50 years of experience consulting for demanding clients globally. Managed over 3,000 programs covering a wide range of industry verticals. My specialization combines science-based research methodologies with structured problem-solving. Clients include Nike, Dyson, Apple, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Pfizer, Merck, Amazon, META, and industries covering high technology, medical/pharmaceutical, financial, heavy industrial, consumer, government/DOD, and startups.

Received numerous citations for human factors and design research, including the IDSA Life-Time Personal Contribution Award, the HFES Alexander C. Williams and Caplan Awards, and citations from NASA, NIOSH, and ACM. A frequent speaker at international conferences, leading academic institutions, and government agencies, including MIT, Stanford, UPenn, The FDA, USPTO, NASA, and legal conferences on a global basis.

Pioneered advanced testing methodologies in non-military applications starting in 1975, including the first integrated use of eye-tracking, GSR, EMG, and Newtonian force measurement. Current methodology integrations include micro-facial expression analysis, EEG, and cognitive workload measurement. Recent research focuses on shape perception science, neuroaesthetics, and complex human factors research for medical devices focused on FDA submission and consumer wearable testing.

BS in Industrial Design from Art Center College of Design and an MSc in Biomechanics/Ergonomics from NYU. Served as an expert in over 75 major IP cases covering design patents, utility patents, trade dress, and copyright-related matters. Co-wrote 4 amicus briefs on the value of design submitted to the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. Developed and validated the first neuroscience-based research protocol, the “Empirical Ordinary Observer Test”. US courts have accepted the EOOT methodology. I have been accepted in court as a survey design and design research expert. I am a primary inventor of core GUI patents covering high-performance trading interfaces utilized globally.

Before founding Mauro Usability Science, worked personally with product design pioneers Henry Dreyfuss and Raymond Loewy.

Our full-time professional staff includes leading experts in human factors engineering, usability science, consumer psychology, cognitive neuroscience, ergonomics, skill acquisition theory and software/hardware engineering. All primary research professionals assigned to critical programs have advanced degrees. We also maintain a large body of practicing professional colleagues from leading university research programs. This additional layer of rapidly available expertise allows us to offer clients exceptionally robust problem solving and research-based services related to product design research and user experience optimization programs.

Professional Certifications

Key members of our professional research staff are certified human factors engineering professionals CHFP. Our professional staff is recruited from leading university research programs in the U.S. and abroad. All critical research programs are personally managed by a research professional with a minimum of 2o years of experience.

Professional Operating Procedures

Our professional research staff undergoes extensive project and GDP process training based on a formalized and audited system of standard operating procedures (SOP). Clients are welcome to audit our GDP and SOP systems which adhere to rigorous industry standards. On programs which require specialized audited data capture methods we offer CFR 21 Part 11 compliant systems. We specialize in the execution of research for FDA drug delivery device certification and have conducted hundreds of complex formative and summative FDA-focused studies. We own and maintain all critical data capture systems and do not lease or otherwise rent testing systems utilized in critical studies.

Data Integrity Standards

Our standard operating procedures include adherence to state of the art data integrity and data management procedures. Our IT systems are audited on a routine basis and updated to support all required client data integrity standards. During live data capture phases of research programs, our systems are designed to protect client data at all times. Our data integrity procedures include on-site and remote backup during all live data capture and during data analysis, reporting and editing for final approval. We are happy to discuss our professional staff, procedures, and methodologies. Please contact Charles L. Mauro CHFP Cmauro@MauroUsabilityScience.Com
